SpaceX has received a license from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch up to 7,500 Starlink satellites as part of its Starlink broadband internet service.
The license was granted by the FCC last week, and will allow SpaceX to launch up to 7,500 Starlink satellites into orbit as part of second generation of its Starlink constellation.
SpaceX previously requested permission to launch up to 39,000 satellites as part of its Starlink constellation, but the FCC has limited the number of satellites that SpaceX can launch to 7,500 citing concerns about the impact of the satellite debris on other satellites and the environment.
After the approval, SpaceX yesterday filed a request with the FCC to launch payloads to helps with their direct to cell phone service with the T-Mobile network announced earlier this year.
After the FCC last week authorized SpaceX to deploy 7,500 Gen2 Starlink satellites, the company yesterday filed a request to put payloads on 2,016 of those satellites for its direct-to-cell system with T-Mobile to enable coverage "by mid-2024."
The partnership allows T-mobile users to receive Starlink internet service through their cell phones as long as they are under a clear view of the sky. The service is expected to be available in the first half of 2024.
SpaceX has already launched ~3,500 Starlink satellites into orbit, and has plans to do at least 1/2 starlink launches per month. The company has around 500,000 active subscribers and is planning to expand its service to more countries around the world.
