SpaceX, in partnership with FIFA World Cup and Qatar Airways, successfully flew two official footballs to space and back for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The balls were carried on a Falcon 9 rocket, which blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
Once in space, the footballs orbited Earth for several hours before being brought back down to the planet’s surface. The balls were then transported back to Qatar on a Qatar Airways airplane.
This historic feat marks the first time that official footballs have been flown to space and back. The balls will now be used in the opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is taking place in Qatar right now.
